Can you tell us about your solo show, American Whore Story? How does it relate to your personal and professional experiences?
Of course! It completely relates to both. The "whore" of "American Whore Story" is not promiscuous, but rather a woman who does what she has to do to get what she wants. We all do it... personally, professionally. We've all dated down, or taken a job we found compromising. AWS chronicles my own history of hustling, from the odd jobs I've held, to my even odder love life. I've hustled long and hard, and made a lot of compromises along the way— but fortunately, I have a new show because of it!

Claro! Ele se relaciona completamente com ambas. A "whore" de "American Whore Story" não é promíscua, mas sim uma mulher que faz o que precisa para conseguir o que quer. Todos nós fazemos isso... pessoalmente e profissionalmente. Todos já namoramos abaixo do esperado ou aceitamos um trabalho comprometedor. What were the biggest challenges in portraying different characters across multiple seasons of American Horror Story and in other film projects?
Honestly, portraying different characters is just what I do, so that's the easy part. It's the in-between time between characters and projects that's the challenging part. It's such a mind-game. As actors, we're constantly waiting, hoping for someone to pick us. All we can really control is ourselves. But the control freak in me isn't satisfied by that, so I've found that creating my own content (like my solo shows) distracts me from the desperate doldrum of waiting, hoping and gives me purpose, if not at least the illusion of being in control.
Quais foram os maiores desafios em interpretar diferentes personagens ao longo de várias temporadas de "American Horror Story" e em outros projetos cinematográficos?
Honestamente, interpretar diferentes personagens é o que eu faço, então essa parte é fácil. O desafiador é o tempo entre personagens e projetos. É um jogo mental. Como atores, estamos constantemente esperando, torcendo para sermos escolhidos. Tudo o que podemos realmente controlar é nós mesmos. Mas a controladora em mim não se satisfaz com isso, então descobri que criar meu próprio conteúdo (como meus shows solo) me distrai da monotonia desesperadora de esperar e dá um propósito, se não a ilusão de estar no controle.
How do you deal with international recognition and the impact that "Pepper" has had on pop culture?
I mean, I spent a lot of time without any recognition— got my SAG card on my 15 birthday, but I was 37 before I could actually go to the doctor using SAG insurance. That 22-year hustle is a lot of what "American Whore Story" is all about. So I love the recognition! It was a long time coming. I never forget where I came from. It's still too recent!
Como você lida com o reconhecimento internacional e o impacto que "Pepper" teve na cultura pop?
Eu passei muito tempo sem nenhum reconhecimento — consegui meu cartão do SAG aos 15 anos, mas tinha 37 quando pude ir ao médico usando o seguro do SAG pela primeira vez. Esses 22 anos de luta são em grande parte o que "American Whore Story" é. Então eu amo o reconhecimento! Demorou muito para acontecer. Nunca esqueço de onde vim. Ainda é muito recente!
You mentioned being trilingual. How has learning other languages influenced your career and your choices of roles?
You say "choices of roles" as if I get to choose! But yes, learning other languages has informed my career, and every aspect of my life, in every way. I lived in Argentina as a teenager, so is it any wonder I tend to date hot, Latin lovers? As a struggling actor, I had all sort of survival jobs: waiting tables at Latin nightclubs, teaching Spanish, doing translations. My first solo show, "Girl in Argentine Landscape" was all about my adolescence, coming of age there. And of course, now, I'm able to travel to comic cons in far-away places, and speak the native tongue. Which is rare for American actors, unfortunately— but it sets me apart, and allows me to interact with fans on a whole other level. So you see, it's informed my existence, in every way. I'd really like be cast in a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking production. In general, I find Hollywood to be quite limiting... They think you have to look a certain way to be a certain nationality. But having travelled, I know that's just not the case. Maybe we can speak it into existence, here and now!

Você menciona "escolha de papéis" como se eu pudesse escolher! Mas sim, aprender outros idiomas influenciou minha carreira e todos os aspectos da minha vida de todas as maneiras. Morei na Argentina na adolescência, então é surpresa que eu tenha tendência a namorar amantes latinos? Como atriz lutadora, tive todo tipo de trabalho de sobrevivência: garçonete em clubes noturnos latinos, ensinando espanhol, fazendo traduções. Meu primeiro show solo, "Girl in Argentine Landscape", foi sobre minha adolescência e crescimento lá. E é claro, agora consigo viajar para comic cons em lugares distantes e falar na língua nativa. Isso é raro para atores americanos, infelizmente — mas me destaca e me permite interagir com os fãs em um nível completamente diferente. Então você vê, informou minha existência de todas as maneiras. Adoraria ser escalada em uma produção falando espanhol ou português. Em geral, acho Hollywood bastante limitante... Acham que você tem que ter uma aparência específica para ser de uma determinada nacionalidade. Mas tendo viajado, sei que isso não é verdade. Talvez possamos falar isso para existência aqui e agora!
With your extensive experience in theater and television, how do you see the future of entertainment, especially in a post-pandemic context?
So hard to say. If I had a crystal ball, I'd be way better off! I do think AI is going to change how film/television is made, and actors' roles within it. Things are definitely slower following the writers', actor's and now deferred IATSE strikes. But that's unavoidable, and well worth it given all the changes that were made. As far as I'm concerned, this business has always been hard, so I personally don't see much difference! All the more reason to keep yourself busy, creating your own content, and only worrying about what you can control (yourself)!
Com sua vasta experiência no teatro e televisão, como você vê o futuro do entretenimento, especialmente em um contexto pós-pandemia?
É difícil dizer. Se eu tivesse uma bola de cristal, estaria muito melhor! Acredito que a inteligência artificial vai mudar como o cinema/televisão é feito e o papel dos atores dentro disso. As coisas estão mais lentas após as greves dos roteiristas, atores e agora do IATSE. Mas isso é inevitável e vale a pena dada todas as mudanças que foram feitas. Para mim, esse negócio sempre foi difícil, então pessoalmente não vejo muita diferença! Mais um motivo para se manter ocupado, criando seu próprio conteúdo e se preocupando apenas com o que você pode controlar (você mesmo)!
What are the most rewarding aspects of being involved in independent projects compared to more mainstream productions?
The idea is that with independent projects, you have more freedom; without "the man" looming over your every move, always. But that's a myth. Even in the case of the more mainstream projects I've done, people tend to be open and willing to play and create on set. I have to believe: I was cast for a reason; and that was to show up, and do what I do, regardless of who's paying for it. So honestly, I find the job to be the same, whether it's indie or mainstream. The real difference is simply the budget.
Quais são os aspectos mais gratificantes de se envolver em projetos independentes em comparação com produções mais mainstream?
A ideia é que em projetos independentes, você tem mais liberdade; sem "o homem" pairando sobre cada movimento seu, sempre. Mas isso é um mito. Mesmo nos casos dos projetos mais mainstream que fiz, as pessoas tendem a ser abertas e dispostas a brincar e criar no set. Tenho que acreditar: fui escalada por um motivo; e foi para aparecer e fazer o que sei fazer, independentemente de quem esteja pagando por isso. Então honestamente, acho o trabalho o mesmo, seja indie ou mainstream. A verdadeira diferença está apenas no orçamento.
How has your journey been from studying at Northwestern University to becoming a prominent figure in the entertainment industry?
Wow! Well, for one, I don't think of myself like that. But Northwestern is known for its prominent alumni: Zach Braff, Heather Headley, Kate Baldwin, Katrina Lenk, Sharif Atkins, and Anne Dudek were all in my class. Katharyn Hahn, Stephanie March, Samantha Harris, and Seth Meyers were in the class ahead of me. I'll never forget him dropping my name to Jessica Lange when she was a guest on his late night talk show. Speaking of... Stephen Colbert, Julia Louise-Dreyfus, David Schwimmer, Zooey Deschanel, Charlotte Ray, Lily Rabe, Denis O'Hare, Charlton Heston, Garry Marshall, Michael Hitchcock, Richard Kind, Kristen Schaal, Nicole Sullivan, Robin Lord Taylor, Billy Eichner, Matt Doherty, Robin Thede, Kimberly Williams, Dermot Mulroney, Warren Beatty, Brian D'Arcy James, Daniele Gaither, Bruno Campos all went there. (I actually took Portuguese at Northwestern, hoping he'd tutor me!) The point is, I'm definitely in good company!

What are your next steps in your career? Are there any types of roles or projects you still wish to explore?
After my upcoming run of "American Whore Story" in Edinburgh, I intend to come back to Los Angeles and shoot it as a comedy special for streaming services. I'm also not ruling out it being the next "Fleabag," which also started out as a one-woman show in Edinburgh! So I need to take a tip from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and get to writing that scripted series. I recently worked on a big movie coming out in the fall of 2025, so I'm anxious to see what doors open after that. Ultimately, I just want to work; but it makes all the difference when it's a project you're proud of. Like "American Horror Story," this movie is that, for sure. So hopefully there will be more where that came from! Not to mention that Spanish/Portuguese-speaking series, remember? We're manifesting that!

Depois da minha próxima temporada de "American Whore Story" em Edimburgo, pretendo voltar para Los Angeles e gravá-lo como um especial de comédia para serviços de streaming. Também não descarto que possa ser o próximo "Fleabag", que também começou como um show solo em Edimburgo! Então preciso seguir o conselho de Phoebe Waller-Bridge e começar a escrever essa série roteirizada. Recentemente trabalhei em um grande filme que será lançado no outono de 2025, então estou ansiosa para ver que portas se abrirão depois disso. No fim das contas, só quero trabalhar; mas faz toda a diferença quando é um projeto do qual você se orgulha. Como "American Horror Story", este filme é assim com certeza. Então espero que haja mais de onde veio isso! Sem mencionar aquela série em espanhol/português, lembra? Estamos manifestando isso!
