Legacy and Transformation: The Impact of Boxing on an Actor's Life

What was it like growing up in a family with three boxing champions? Did that influence your decision to pursue a career in sports before becoming an actor?
You know, it didn't. Becoming an actor was an interesting change in my life. I have loved boxing ever since my dad introduced it to me, but there were strained moments in my relationship with my dad. He is a strong, strict man, and we butted heads. The only time I got somewhat of positive attention from him was boxing. Although again, my boxing journey wasn't a walk in the park. When I started to get interested in music, I realized that my dad had no interest in it, and he didn't want to be a part of it. I think subconsciously it made me free to express myself, and that led to me pursuing music.
I played with the same guys from high school for years and it was the best times in my life. I still loved boxing and I would sneak off to other gyms without the guys in the band knowing because if I broke my hand everyone was out of a job. But I just love the sport so much. What's a trip, is that boxing drove my dad and I apart, but it also brought us back together. He was going through a little depression, and on the couch, so I convinced him to come to this boxing club I heard of, and I wanted him there. (I was already training there for a while and told the guys at the gym to pretend they don't know me) He came in, loved it, and was there for over 25 years teaching boxing and going to tournaments! He loved it and all the boxers loved him there.
My buddy Kent Brown, an amazing boxer and now top trainer in Canada, had my dad at his gym all the time. So, boxing has played an interesting role in life. One time I was playing a gig, and afterward a casting director invited me to an audition. I said yes, got the role, and fell in love with telling stories. And to wrap up the long-winded answer, early on and in several moments in my career now boxing and acting intersect. My background in boxing allowed me the opportunity to get cool boxing roles, and I love the ability to shoot fight scenes. So, I give credit to my career to my dad all the way from the beginning.
Como foi crescer em uma família com três campeões de boxe? Isso influenciou sua decisão de seguir uma carreira no esporte antes de se tornar ator?
Sabe, não influenciou. Tornar-me ator foi uma mudança interessante na minha vida. Sempre amei o boxe desde que meu pai me apresentou, mas houve momentos tensos no meu relacionamento com ele. Ele é um homem forte e rigoroso, e nós tivemos desentendimentos. A única vez que recebi uma atenção positiva dele foi através do boxe. Embora, novamente, minha jornada no boxe não tenha sido fácil. Quando comecei a me interessar por música, percebi que meu pai não tinha interesse nisso e não queria participar. Acho que isso me fez me sentir livre para me expressar, o que me levou a seguir a música.
Toquei com os mesmos caras da escola por anos e foram os melhores momentos da minha vida. Eu ainda amava o boxe e costumava me esconder em outras academias sem que os caras da banda soubessem, porque se eu quebrasse a mão, todo mundo ficaria sem emprego. Mas eu amo muito o esporte. O curioso é que o boxe afastou meu pai e eu, mas também nos reuniu. Ele estava passando por uma pequena depressão e estava no sofá, então eu o convenci a ir a um clube de boxe que eu tinha ouvido falar, e eu queria que ele estivesse lá. (Eu já estava treinando lá há um tempo e pedi para os caras da academia fingirem que não me conheciam) Ele foi, adorou e ficou lá por mais de 25 anos ensinando boxe e indo a torneios! Ele adorou e todos os boxeadores o amavam lá.
Meu amigo Kent Brown, um boxeador incrível e agora um dos principais treinadores do Canadá, tinha meu pai na sua academia o tempo todo. Então, o boxe desempenhou um papel interessante na vida. Uma vez eu estava fazendo um show, e depois disso um diretor de elenco me convidou para uma audição. Eu disse sim, consegui o papel e me apaixonei por contar histórias. E para resumir a resposta longa, desde o início e em vários momentos da minha carreira, o boxe e a atuação se cruzam. Meu histórico no boxe me deu a oportunidade de conseguir papéis legais de boxe e eu adoro a capacidade de filmar cenas de luta. Então, eu dou crédito à minha carreira ao meu pai desde o começo.
Was the transition from boxing to acting and music natural for you, or did you find it challenging to establish yourself in the arts?
It was definitely natural. Boxing is about composure. The more relaxed you are in the ring the more you can be creative in the most strenuous situations, and music gave me the confidence to be in front of a crowd to perform. So, when it came to acting, I already had the tools. I just now needed to know what tool to use at the right time. Understanding my toolbox took a bit, but I feel I'm getting there.

Do you remember the exact moment when you were "discovered" while performing in a rock band?
How did that influence your decision to pursue an acting career? Yeah, I was playing in the band, got off stage, and was asked to audition. I remember I was excited because I'm a yes guy in that way. I loved trying anything that scares me or challenges my ego. And luckily, I booked it. And the funniest thing about it all - after playing in a band with 4 other dudes in a van and no money, eating 1.5 noodles just to get by, I got to set and the AD pointed to a massive buffet table of food and said, "grab your breakfast and meet us at hair and makeup". I was like, "What did you just say?" He replied, "grab whatever you want". Maaannn, I loaded up like I was never going to eat again. That's when I knew I wanted to learn this craft. Haha! But in all seriousness, I just fell in love with telling stories.
Você se lembra do momento exato em que foi "descoberto" enquanto se apresentava em uma banda de rock? Como isso influenciou sua decisão de seguir uma carreira de ator?
Sim, eu estava tocando na banda, saí do palco e fui convidado para uma audição. Lembro que estava animado porque sou um cara que diz sim para essas coisas. Eu adorava tentar qualquer coisa que me assustasse ou desafiasse meu ego. E, por sorte, consegui o papel. E a parte mais engraçada de tudo isso – depois de tocar em uma banda com 4 outros caras em uma van e sem dinheiro, comendo 1,5 pacotes de macarrão só para sobreviver, eu cheguei ao set e o AD apontou para uma mesa enorme de bufê e disse: “Pegue seu café da manhã e nos encontre no cabelo e maquiagem”. Eu fiquei tipo: “O que você acabou de dizer?” Ele respondeu: “Pegue o que quiser”. Caramba, eu me empilhei como se nunca mais fosse comer. Foi quando eu soube que queria aprender esse ofício. Haha! Mas, falando sério, eu simplesmente me apaixonei por contar histórias.
In "Personal Effects," you played a developmentally disabled man. How did you prepare for such a challenging role?
I loved this role. I loved the director, David Hollander, and the amazing cast. My agent had to really push to get me in the room because I had never auditioned for a role like this. When they were casting my part, I wasn't on any casting directors' radar, and it was going to be my biggest role at the time. But this role has substance and vulnerability, and it was something I knew I could bring so much to. I just finished working on the play "Of Mice and Men", playing Lenny with one of the best acting coaches in the world, Larry Moss. The role in Personal Effects was like Lenny, except Tom had a conscience, Lenny didn't. Finally in the 11th hour of casting they decided to call me in. Walking into the audition, doing that first take, and actually being noticed as someone that could do this role at an elite level? WOW. Just changed my life and my confidence in the craft. I started acting late. It wasn't until my mid 30's that I started to take it seriously. I didn't really start working till my 40's, so this was a role that gave me the confidence that I could roll with the big dawgs.
Em "Personal Effects", você interpretou um homem com deficiência intelectual. Como você se preparou para um papel tão desafiador?
Eu amei esse papel. Adorei o diretor, David Hollander, e o elenco incrível. Meu agente teve que se esforçar muito para me colocar na sala porque eu nunca tinha feito uma audição para um papel assim. Quando estavam escalando meu papel, eu não estava no radar de nenhum diretor de elenco, e esse seria o meu maior papel na época. Mas esse papel tem substância e vulnerabilidade, e era algo que eu sabia que poderia trazer muito. Eu tinha acabado de trabalhar na peça "Of Mice and Men", interpretando Lenny com um dos melhores treinadores de atuação do mundo, Larry Moss. O papel em "Personal Effects" era como Lenny, exceto que Tom tinha uma consciência, Lenny não tinha. Finalmente, na última hora da escalação, decidiram me chamar. Entrar na audição, fazer aquela primeira tomada e ser realmente notado como alguém que poderia fazer esse papel em um nível de elite? UAU. Mudou minha vida e minha confiança no ofício. Comecei a atuar tarde. Não foi até os meus 30 e poucos anos que comecei a levar a sério. Eu realmente não comecei a trabalhar até os meus 40 e poucos anos, então esse foi um papel que me deu a confiança de que eu poderia competir com os grandes.
What was the most memorable experience of working alongside big names like Kathy Bates, Ashton Kutcher, Tom Hardy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger?
All of them were amazing experiences. Honestly, I love being star struck. I don't hide it. I'll tell someone I'm a fan of their work all the time. That's what I love about being in this business. The childlike enthusiasm I have for this business I make sure I hold onto. And I've had amazing conversations with all of them.
Qual foi a experiência mais memorável de trabalhar com grandes nomes como Kathy Bates, Ashton Kutcher, Tom Hardy e Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Todas foram experiências incríveis. Honestamente, eu amo estar deslumbrado. Eu não escondo isso. Sempre digo a alguém que sou fã do trabalho deles. Isso é o que eu amo sobre estar nesse negócio. O entusiasmo infantil que tenho por esse trabalho eu faço questão de manter. E tive conversas incríveis com todos eles.
In addition to acting, you're also the Executive Producer of the series "Genzeroes." What was it like working behind the scenes on a sci-fi NFT production?
Oh man! I loved working on this show. My partner on the show, Neil Stevenson Moore, brought the project to me and I was able to get an amazing team together. The likes of Paul Wright (Big Show from WWE), Tahmoh Penikett, Richard Harmon, and so many more. To produce and star in that was such a playground. What's really exciting is that it looks like we may get it rebooted as a series or a franchise film. Some amazing interest is happening, and I'm really excited about it.

Ah, cara! Eu amei trabalhar nesse show. Meu parceiro no show, Neil Stevenson Moore, trouxe o projeto para mim e eu consegui reunir uma equipe incrível. LEGEND, your new canned water from the Rocky Mountains of Canada, has a strong focus on mental health awareness. What inspired you to develop this project?
I've always disliked all the plastic bottles on set. A plethora of plastic. During a 60-day shoot 40k bottles are used. And it takes 3 times the volume of water to make a plastic bottle then it does to fill it. 3 times! That's crazy! And it's not recyclable. LEGEND is made in aluminum cans. The most recycled product in the beverage world. The one that really taught me a lot about it was my buddy, Jason Momoa. He's all about saving the oceans and the planet and he's doing it in such a big way. His aluminum water bottle is called MANANLU! Massive inspiration! The co - owner of LEGEND and a friend of 30 years, James Pierce, and I started to talk about it and decided to make a difference on our side of the border. We also have a QR code on the can that says, "Legends Supporting Legends." The QR code gets you to our home page but also a suicide crisis hotline and rehab facilities in different Provinces in Canada. We just want to take the stigma out of not being able to talk about our problems. If one person makes a call, we have done our job. Just to open the conversation. We are not an island. I've gone through my battles of depression and talking to caring people helped me out. I just wanted people to know it's ok and that people want to listen. I'm just really proud of our whole team! Sempre detestei todas as garrafas plásticas no set. Uma quantidade enorme de plástico. Durante uma filmagem de 60 dias, são usadas 40 mil garrafas. E leva 3 vezes o volume de água para fabricar uma garrafa plástica do que para enchê-la. 3 vezes! Isso é loucura! E não é reciclável. A LEGEND é feita em latas de alumínio. O produto mais reciclado no mundo das bebidas. Quem realmente me ensinou muito sobre isso foi meu amigo, Jason Momoa. Ele é totalmente voltado para salvar os oceanos e o planeta e está fazendo isso de uma maneira muito grande. Sua garrafa de água de alumínio se chama MANANLU! Uma enorme inspiração! O co-proprietário da LEGEND e um amigo de 30 anos, James Pierce, e eu começamos a conversar sobre isso e decidimos fazer a diferença do nosso lado da fronteira. You've had roles in iconic series like "Snowpiercer" and "Hawkeye." How was it to portray such distinct characters in such different universes?
It's a blast!! Come on! Being part of the Marvel universe is every kid's dream. And we did it! I have an amazing team behind me. And it was a big celebration when we booked it. Then being offered Snowpiercer?? Come on! I was a big fan of the movie before I even knew about the series. So those two gigs were highlights of my career. In Hawkeye it had some comedy and a bumbling tough guy Ivan in the Tracksuit Mafia. And in Snowpiercer, Boki was a problem solver and devoted to Wilfred, but when he found out what kind of a guy Wilford was, Boki then sided with the revolution. Showed he had morals and ethics. Both were just really fun to play. 9. With a career that spans boxing, music, acting, and production, how do you find balance between these passions? I think the passion comes from the love. And when you love something. It's not work. I'm going to Spain for a vacation, but it feels weird because I feel like my life is a vacation. So, I'm looking at it as filling my toolbox with life experiences and allowing myself to be in the moment.

Foi uma diversão!! Vamos lá! Fazer parte do universo Marvel é o sonho de toda criança. E nós conseguimos! Tenho uma equipe incrível ao meu lado. E foi uma grande celebração quando conseguimos o papel. Depois, ser oferecido para "Snowpiercer"?? Vamos lá! Eu era um grande fã do filme antes mesmo de saber da série. Então, esses dois trabalhos foram pontos altos da minha carreira. Em "Hawkeye", havia um pouco de comédia e um cara durão atrapalhado, Ivan, na Máfia do Tracksuit. E em "Snowpiercer", Boki era um solucionador de problemas e devoto de Wilfred, mas quando descobriu que tipo de cara era Wilford, Boki então se juntou à revolução. Com uma carreira que abrange boxe, música, atuação e produção, como você encontra equilíbrio entre essas paixões?
Acho que a paixão vem do amor. E quando você ama algo, não é trabalho. Vou para a Espanha de férias, mas parece estranho porque sinto que minha vida é uma férias. Então, estou vendo isso como uma maneira de preencher minha caixa de ferramentas com experiências de vida e me permitir estar no momento.
What are your upcoming projects?
Is there a role or type of character you haven't yet played but would like to explore in the future?
I have 2 projects I can't talk about yet. Oooooo, when I can you'll be the first to know! Haha. And I've always wanted to play a True Detective Season One kind of role. Tortured soul that is trying to do the good thing in life. The writing and performance in that season is crrrrazy!!! Either the Woody or Mathew part. Just damn excellence!
